The direction here is not given, normally comes into form of identity.
1 + CotX = 1 + sinX/ CosX =( CosX + SinX )/ CosX
If it was 1 + Cot ^2X
then:
1 + Cot^2 X
1 + Cos^2 X / Sin ^2 X = ( Sin^2X + Cos^2 X) / Sin^2 X = 1/ Sin^2X = CSC^2 X

Cot = cos/sin
