Step 1 convert the first number(numerator) from mixed to improper fraction; result is5/3
Step 2 WHENEVER you divide one fraction by another (the second one is the denominator), change the denominator to its reciprocal (i.e. upside down) and MULTIPLY the numerator by that; in this case you have (5/3) times (9/5)
Step 3. You COULD multiply the tops and bottoms, getting 45/15--and that would reduce to 3 because 3 times 15 = 45.
Alternatively, the fives would cancel (because 5 in the bottom 'kills' the 5 in the top), and also the 3 in the bottom goes into the 9 in the top, thus giving the result 3.
This alternative method, cancellaltions, is superior to the other method--if you can break down composite numbers into their factors.
