1 2/3 devided by 5/9? please explain and break it down so I can understand

I'm confused I feel like I'm sort of on the right track but I don't understand the method please explain to me in detail because I'm seriously no good with maths. Thank you

Step 1 convert the first number(numerator) from mixed to improper fraction; result is5/3

Step 2 WHENEVER you divide one fraction by another (the second one is the denominator), change the denominator to its reciprocal (i.e. upside down) and MULTIPLY the numerator by that; in this case you have (5/3) times (9/5)

Step 3.  You COULD multiply the tops and bottoms, getting 45/15--and that would reduce to 3 because 3 times 15 = 45.

Alternatively, the fives would cancel (because 5 in the bottom 'kills' the 5 in the top), and also the 3 in the bottom goes into the 9 in the top, thus giving the result 3.

 

This alternative method, cancellaltions, is superior to the other method--if you can break down composite numbers into their factors.

when dealing with fractions, I don't like them being mixed fractions, so the first thing I would do is make the 1 2/3 improper.

 

To do that, we multiply the denominator by the whole number out front (3x1=3), add the numerator (3+2=5) and then slap it over the denominator to give us an improper fraction of 5/3.

 

so, we have 5/3 divided by 5/9.

 

when dividing fractions, it's the same as multiplying by the reciprocal of the second farction. The reciprocal of a fraction is just that fraction with the numerator and denominator switched. so

 

5/3 divided by 5/9 is the same as 5/3 x 9/5.

 

You have 2 ways to finish. you can multiply across the numerator and denominator, get an answer, and then reduce/simplify. or you can reduce/simplify first and get an answer. I prefer to simplify/reduce first.

 

When multiplying fractions, any numerator can cancel or reduce with any denominator.

 

so look at 5/3 x 9/5. The 5s can cancel out since they're both divisible by 5, and they'r eon opposite sides of the fraction bar.

 

so that gives us

 

1/3 x 9/1.

 

We can reduce further...both 3 and 9 are divisible by 3.

 

so now we have

 

1/1 x 3/1

 

multiply across and you get

 

3/1 which is equal to 3.
