ohan brought some marbles.He gave 5/9 of the marbles to his classmates and 3/8 of the remaining mables to his cousins.If he had 75 marbles left how many marbles did he have at first ?

Let m = original # marbles

 

m - (5/9)m - (3/8)(4/9)m = 75

m - (5/9)m - (1/6)m = 75

 

We can clear the fractions by multiplying

through by 18

 

18m - 10m - 3m = 1350

5m = 1350

m = 1350/5

m = 270 marbles
