The doorway of a family room measures 78 inches by 36 inches. What is the length of the diagonal?

Two sides of the doorway ( a and b) and the diagonal (c) make a right triangle.  The diagonal of the doorway would be the hypotenuse and can be found using the Pythagorean equation.

 

a² + b² = c²

 

78² + 36² = c² 

 

6084 + 1296 = c²

 

7380 = c² 

 

Apply square root to both sides

 

∼ 85.91 = c

 

Length of the diagonal is ∼85.91 inches.
