My goal is the success of my students. Knowledge-Patience-Honesty
(x^2 + 5x ) - 5 = 0
Divide 5 by 2 and square it...
(5/2)^2 = 25/4
Add 25/4 to both sides:
(x^2 + 5x + 25/4) - 5 = 0 + 25/4
Factor:
(x + 5/2)^2 - 5 = 25/4
Add 5 or (20/4) to both sides:
(x + 5/2)^2 = (25/4) + (20/4)
(x + 5/2)^2 = 45/4
Take the square root of both sides:
x + 5/2 = +/- sqrt(45)/sqrt(4)
x + 5/2 = +/- 3 sqrt(5)/2
Add -5/2 to both sides:
x = -5/2 +/- 3√5/2
Quadratic:
-5 +/- sqrt(25 - 4(1)(-5))
----------------------------
2(1)
-5 +/- sqrt(45)
---------------- Check.
