A farmer had a total of 995 horses and cows. After selling some of the horses and cows, he had 510 horses and 390 cows left. How many horses and cows did he sell altogether?

Tameysha, take the total number of horses and cows that the farmer had and subtract the number that he now has left to get the number of horses and cows that he sold.  Hint:  You have two numbers to subtract from the total.

Add up how many of these horses & cows he still has: 510 + 390 = 900.

He started with 995 horses. Subtract: 995 - 900 = 95 to get how many he sold.
