About Heather

I am an effective and experienced secondary Spanish and ESL teacher taking time from a full-time teaching career to raise my family. Currently, I am teaching Spanish to a group of preschool students in my community but I’m certified to teach middle school and high school Spanish and ESOL and have taught Spanish levels I - IV, including Spanish for Native Speakers and ESL grades K-12.

In addition to the traditional classroom, I have worked in an alternative education setting and could be a great motivational coach for the homeschooler. Providing support to students in their core content areas was important to me as an ESL teacher and I am comfortable guiding students through most coursework that they may struggle with.

I have expertise in assessing language needs and assure individualized instruction since 1992. I am native English speaker that has endured the pitfalls of learning Spanish as a Second Language, which allows me to help the student avoid these experiences. Giving students the tools and positive support to improve their skills and achieve beyond their expectations is my goal.

Additional practical language and cultural experience includes but is not limited to:

In January 2014, some generous sponsors chose to send me to Nicaragua on a mission trip with AMOS Health & Hope. Our group installed approximately 40 water filtration devices in a rural community. Prior study abroad includes intensive one year language study at la Universidad de las Américas in Puebla, Mexico as well as time in Madrid, Spain.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a teacher certified in grades 5-12 but have worked with K-12 students in a variety of classroom settings. I am currently working with students in grades: 1-5 on phonics, reading fluency and reading comprehension in both English and Spanish as well as working as an instructional assistant in a 4th grade math class. In past positions at the K-5 level, I have worked with students on composition, computer assisted reading programs, computer lab, Rosetta Stone, language lab, Spanish and ESL.

Grammar

I have been successfully helping students to hone their grammar skills in English and Spanish professionally since 1992. Working with middle and high school students has been my specialty but I also enjoy working with people on either end of the spectrum, elementary age to adult. I am skilled at completing assessments for K-12 students to diagnose language needs and assure individualized instruction.

Handwriting

I am a certified teacher, and I have taught printing and handwriting for elementary school children beginning with kindergarten students. We focus on the careful formation of letters to showcase the student's penmanship. Handwriting helps many tactile learners to improve focus and recall by jotting notes in their own handwriting.

Microsoft PowerPoint

Have you ever wondered how to generate slides for a presentation using PowerPoint? Let me help you improve your presentation skills by helping you select text, graphics and music options that help to showcase your work. Have you wondered how to transition between slides or which colors and fonts will make your display more appealing? Would you like to create handouts for your participants? Let me show you how to easily generate an appealing presentation and efficiently create hand-outs from your slides.

Microsoft Word

Would you like to use Microsoft Word for word processing but don't know where to begin? I can help you format margins, choose your desired orientation and select fonts, In addition I can help you add graphics like tables, charts, photos and presentations that can help you share your desired information. If you need to share your document edits with another user, I can show you how to track the changes made in a document.

Phonics

Working as a Bilingual Title I Assistant in a local elementary school, my responsibilities included assuring Title I compliance for K-3 students. I was responsible for presenting the prescribed curriculum, as well as administering DIBELS and IDEL assessments.

Reading

My teaching experience includes helping K - 12 students to improve their literacy levels in both English and Spanish. I have helped new readers with phonics, decoding, fluency and comprehension. On the other hand, I have challenged more advanced students to analyze text using a variety of graphic organizers to arrange their thoughts and demonstrate their comprehension of the reading as well as how it applies to the world around us.
