You're not stupid Alice! This one is a little tricky with all of the negatives.

You should set it up like this:

 

x - 45 = -16

 

This makes sense with your problem because it says 45 subtracted from x (which is x - 45) is (or is equal to) -16

 

Now we just add 45 to both sides:

 

x = 29
