Hi Vera, set this up as an addition / subtraction problem.
50 - 25 1/8 - 12 1/4
Find the common denominator:
The common denominator for 4 and 8 is 8. Convert all values to fractions with the denominator of 8.
50 * 8 = 400
25 * 8 = 200
12 * 8 = 96
1/4 = 2/8
The problem becomes:
400 / 8 - 201 / 8 - 98 / 8 = 400 / 8 - 299 / 8 = 101 / 8
Finish by converting 101 / 8 to a mixed fraction:
101 / 8 = 12 and 5 / 8
