A 12-inch by 8-inch photograph is being reduced by a scale factor of 1/4. What are the dimensions of the new photograph?

So, we must find the new dimensions of the photo after its been reduced by a scale factor of 1/4. Then, what we do is divide both dimensions of 12 and 8 by 4 to obtain


(12/4) by (8/4) = 3 inches by 2 inches.
