Find exact value without using a calculator?

Question

If sin theta = -12/13 when 3pi/2 <= theta <= 2pi, find the exact values of cos theta/2

y² + (-12)² = (13)²

 

y² + 144   = 169

 

y² =25    which gives y =± 5 

 

The range of θ is  2π <=θ <=3π/2  therefore y = -5

 

cosθ = -5/13
