To get the common demoninator find the lowest number for which both denominators are factors.
In this case, one denominator is 4 and the other one is 3.
Find the lowest number for which 4 and 3 are both factors.
You can usually start by just multiplying them together.
A better way to do it to guarantee the lowest common demoninator is to take the largest denominator number and multiply it by 2, 3, 4, etc, etc until you get a number that the smaller denominator number will evenly divide into.
In this case, the common denominator is 12.
1/4 = 3/12
2/3 = 8/12
