The 1.5" margin all around reduces the usable area to:
(8.5 - 1.5 -1.5) x (11 - 1.5 - 1.5)
5.5" x 8"
Three boxes have two spaces (of 0.25") between them. That makes it 3x+2(0.25) = 3x + 0.50
The usable width of the page:
5.5 = 3x + 0.5
5.0 = 3x
5/3 = x
x = 1 2/3" width of each box
The usable height of the page:
8 = 3y + 0.5
7.5 = 3y
2 1/2" = y height of each box

Well organized, yet (I think) a minor error.
Assume the boxes are stacked horizontally. The horizontal measure would be 5.5" (they extend to the margins). The vertical would be (8 - 0.5) / 3 or 2.5".
Assume the boxes are upright. The vertical measure would be 8" (they extend to the margins). The horizontal would be (5.5 - 0.5) / 3 or 1 2/3 inches.
