20/2(5+5)=

the answers include 0, 1, and 100

no wonder many of our kids have trouble
with math when the adults in their lives can't get the correct answer.

At the time of this edit there are four answers. And once again they split 2 for 100, and 2 for something else. One person providing a questionable/wrong answer

is a PhD candidate. Hopefully not in anything dealing with basic math.

The problem presented is the problem. The task was to explain this problem. You do not have the luxury of moving or adding parentheses for that will in most cases change the problem, with the exception being grouping for clarity 20/2(5+5)=(20/2)•(5+5)

20/(2•10) does not equal the above problems nor does it equal 20/(2•5)+5

Changing the grouping and the order you perform the math operations creates a different problem with the same digits involved.

There is no split. The alternate answer of 1 was provided by most posters was in consideration of the possibility of presentation error.

The correct (and only) answer for the given problem is 100.

The problem presented is the problem. Nothing was left out.

Jeff, like I said, the problem is ambiguous. A set of parentheses was left out. Because of this, the problem can be interpreted in two different ways, thus giving two different answers. How do you know that a set of parentheses was not left out ? If the problem can be interpreted in two different ways then something is wrong. You yourself said you could not get the correct answer. Why do you think you cannot get the correct answer ? The reason is that "something was left out-it was written such that it could be interpreted in two ways thus giving two different answers." There is only one answer and that answer depends on where the missing set of parentheses is put !!!

If the problem is written as   20              then this is entirely different. The answer is 10*10=100.
                                          --- (5+5)
                                           2
However, if the problem is written with the "/", then it is ambiguous. If you had written the problem with the fraction bar _ instead of the slash /, then there would have been no argument as to the answer.

Your first explanation Is correct. There is no fraction intended here Except for 20/2.

PEMDAS left to right. Period.

You do realize a fraction is a division problem written in a different form. If not maybe you should tutor math without  refresher course.

I assure you I do not need a refresher course on fractions. It seems to me that there was no software to allow for fraction formatting, at least on the mobile version.
