What we do now is total up each column starting with the ones and move to the left:

1 + 0 = 1

Remove the separating line, and it looks like this:

So 10 + 9 = 19

9+10= 19 because if you have nine items and add ten more, you will have a total of 19 items. 

For example, if we have nine hearts and add ten more hearts, we get nineteen hearts total.
