12x + 5 = 2x --> 5 = 2x - 12x --> 5=-10x --> 5/-10 = x --> -1/2 = x
All you're doing is moving things around to simplify the equation to solve for x. We want to get X alone so to do that we combine the terms that contain x, which is why we subtract 12x from both sides. Now we have all the Xs on one side so we can solve for x.
