In 305, the senior emperors jointly abdicated and retired, allowing Constantius and Galerius to be elevated in rank to Augustus. They in turn appointed two new Caesars—Severus II in the west under Constantius, and Maximinus in the east under Galerius—thereby creating the second Tetrarchy.
Later Constantius killed the other 3 emperors becoming the only Cesar and moving to Constantinople named after him as the west part of the empire due the the barbarian invasions was becoming less and less strategic, while the eastern side gained lots of visibility and importance as middle point between Asia and Europe. Here start what we call Byzantine empire but in reality it was the Oriental Roman Empire.
