Two baseball players hit 79 home runs combined last season. The first player hit 7 more runs then the second player. How many home runs did each player hit?

Here's what we know:

x + y = 79

x = y + 7

 

(y + 7) + y = 79

2y + 7 = 79

Subtract 7 from both sides:

2y = 72

Divide by 2:

y = 36

 

We now have y's value:

x = 36 + 7

x = 43

 

Check:

36 + 43 = 79

79 = 79
