Question

Oh Nuts! Sells pistachio kernels for $10 per pound and almosnds for $8 per pound. How much of each type should be used to make a 50-pound mixture that sells for $8 per pound.

Kind of a weird question.  Might be a typo?  As written, you would just want to use 50 lbs of almonds since adding in any pistachios would increase the average price to more than $8 per pound.

 

If you guys are solving systems of equations, then the equations would look something like this, where p is pounds of pistachios, and a is pounds of almonds:

 

p + a = 50  (equation for pounds)

 

10p + 8a = 50(8)  (equation for money)
