If terms are just numbers with no variables you add or subtract them depending on the sign. .
5 + 7 - 2 = 10
If terms have and "X" in them, you combine them. .
X + 4X -3X = 2X . . . remember that X means 1 times X
If terms have X squared in them (X^2), you combine them
If terms have x cubed in them (X^3), you combine them.
If terms have "Y" in them you combine them.
Try this example, don't look at the answer until you try it yourself:
Y = 4X + 3X^2 + 12 - x^2 + 5X - 2
