There are different types of proofs, such as algebraic or Geometric proofs.

 

With formal Geometry proofs, you need  to see what it is that is supposed to be proven and what information they have given you. The end of your proof has what it is that you are trying to prove.

As you move towards the final step, you may need to put down information that they have given you on the left side of the proof and the reasons on the right side.   For example,  look at the Geometry proof below:

 

Given:  (a*b)*c                                  a, b, c are real numbers

 

Prove that (a*b)*c= (a*c)*b

 

Statements                                  Reasons

1.  (a*b)*c                                  1.  given

2.  a*(b*c)                                  2.  associative property of multiplication  

3.  a*(c*b)                                  3.  This is the commutative property because c*b=b*c.
