Let x = the number of shirts in total

Let 0.65x = number of medium

Let 0.40(0.65x) = number of small

 

We can set the equation to represent the total number of shirts.

 

0.65x + 0.40(0.65x) + 450 = x

 

 

Solve for x.

 

0.65x + 0.26x + 450 = x

 

 

Subtract x and subtract 450 on both sides of equation.

 

-0.09x = -450

 

 

Divide both sides of equation by -0.09

 

x = 5000

 

 

She is ordering 5000 shirts.

Medium = 65% 0f x = 65x/100 

 

Small = 40 % of medium = 40/100  * 65x/100  = 2600 x / 10000 = 26x/100

 

Large = Total - ( Addition of small and medium)

 

450 = x - (65x/100 + 26x/100)

 

450  =  x - 91x/100

 

450 = (100x-91x)/100

 

450 = 9x/100

 

x = 450*100/9 = 50*100 = 5000

 

So, she is ordering 5000 t-shirts
