Making Math Make Sense
This equation is in point-slope form: y - y1=m (x - x1) where (x1, y1) and m are all (not so) hidden in the equation.
By just looking that the equation, we see that the m (or slope) is 1/3. Recall slope means rise/run...so when we are ready to graph we will rise 1 and run 3 based on the slope in the equation.
You will notice the equation we were given has plus/positive signs rather than negative signs in the general formula.
We can re-write the given equation to match the point-slope formula like this:
y-(-2)=1/3(x-(-6))...which matches our formula perfectly!
THEREFORE, (-6, -2) is a point on the line. Plot that point on your coordinate graph, then from there follow the slope rule given to us (rise 1, run 3) for your second point. Connect the points to create your line and you are DONE! : )
