We need a common denominator. the LCD between the two is 40:
3/8 * 5/5 = 15/40
4/5 * 8/8 = 32/40
Now that we have a common denominator, we can subtract our fractions:
32/40 - 15/40 = 17/40 of a mile
Since the numerator and denominator don't share a common factor, that is as simplified as it's going to get.
