Now notice how |74| > 10. However 7.4 × 10¹ where 1 ≤ |7.4| < 10.

 

Rewrite as 7.4 × 10¹ × 10⁶. Now simplify by noting 10¹ × 10⁶ = 10¹⁺⁶ = 10⁷.

 

74 million = 7.4 × 10⁷.
