The perimeter of a rectangle is 40 yd. the length is 6 yd more than its width. Find the dimensions

This is Algebra and an Algebra word problem and you have to find the dimensions

therefore width = x

and length = x+6

 

to solve for the perimeter, 2(x) + 2(x+6) = 40 yds

 

                                       2x + 2x + 12 = 40 yds

                                  

                                               4x + 12 = 40 yds

 

                                                       4x = 28 yds

 

                                                         x = 7 yds

 

                      if width = x, then it has to be 7 yds

 

                 therefore length will be x + 6 = 13 yds

 

        and to check yourself - 7 + 7 + 13 + 13 = 40

1) write an equation out for the perimeter: General formula 2*length+2*width=perimeter

2) Write an equation for this statement:  length is 6 yd more than its width

If length is more then length must be a larger number.  Length= 6+width
