Hi there,
so if each friend received a gift of $145.34, we just need to count how many $145.34's add up to $2568.68. This way we can see how many times Sally spent "145.34". By knowing that, we will know how many friends she bought a gift for.
To set up an equation, we can do this:
145.34 * X = 2568.68 (X=the number of gifts sally bought/number of friends who received a gift) ("*" is multiply)
X=2568.68/145.34
If you solve for X you will get you answer!
Hope this helped!

I agree with David. If your quotient is a decimal or irrational number, it indicates the quotient has a remainder. The quotient part of the complete solution that David was nice to provide for us here is 17. The remainder part is the digits after the decimal. This is because the amount of money could not be shared evenly among the friends.
17.67359 means that 17 friends get $145.34 evenly. If we multiply the number of friends who get the share by the amount of money each friend gets, we get a value without going over the total amount.
Now, if we had 18 friends who got the share, then the value would go over the total.
This problem shows that long division is a VERY important procedure.
