A hospital administrator must decrease staff size by 1 / 12. If the hospital employs 456 people. how many people must be dismissed?

You want to decrease 1/12 OF 456 people.  The word OF is your key, it means multiply in word problems so multiply 1/12 times 456.  

 

1/12 * 456 = 38
