So our unknown width is X and the unknown length is X + 3.  We know the perimeter is 2 times the length plus 2 times the width so let's set up that equation:

 

2 X + 2 (X+3) = 24

 

Now solve for X

 

2 X + 2 X + 6 = 24

 

4 X + 6 = 24

 

4 X = 18

 

X = 4.5 - this is the width

 

X + 3 = 4.5 + 3 = 7.5 - this is the length
