Yeah, i know the products come out differently... I solved both equations. I want to know why it doesn't work.

Jamie, keep asking "Why?"  Then, when you are not satisfied with the answer, ask "Why?" again and again !

Let's try a simpler problem with small numbers, say 4x5 and 3x6,  Those are obviously different, but "Why?"  --  oops, that's supposed to be your question, but I was wondering, too.

  XXXX    YYY
  XXXX    YYY
  XXXX    YYY
  XXXX    YYY
  XXXX    YYY
              YYY

And, if you took the bold X's and put them in rows of 3, we could see that there would be 3 extra.  In math, we say that 4*5 = 20 and 3*6 = 18.  That means 2 left over when we compare the results.

Now, I know that some math derivations and proofs and logical reasoning requires the kind of questioning that you have right now, so PLZ don't just memorize the formula or always believe the teacher (note: I have posted errors on this forum and most other tutors have also -- WyzAnt has excellent records).

Keep asking, "Why?"

Another point:  (21)(34) = (20 + 1)(35 - 1) = (20)(35) + 35 - 20 - 1 = (20)(35) + 14 ≠ (20)(35)
