A product is the result of a multiplication, so the product of our number and 9 can be written as x*9

 

If this product is increased by 4 you get 58 -> x*9+4=58

 

All you need to do is solve the equation for x.

The product of a number and 9, increased by 4, is 58. Find the number.  Write it this way:  9X + 4 = 58

Remember in an equation, what you do to one side of the equal sign, you do to the other.  The idea is to get the X to stand alone.  

 

9X + 4 = 58.         First, I want to get the 9X by itself.  I subtract 4 from each number.

      -4      -4

     ____  ____

               54

 

9X/9 = 1X           To get X to equal 1, I have to divide it by 9.  I also have to divide 54 by 9.

 

54/9 = 6              So, X = 6      9 times 6 is 54, and 54 plus 4 is 58
