I'm fairly certain the student meant the square root of y to the power of 8.

Agreed.  That's what I used.   (parentheses help, though)

Yep, I saw David! The comment was to Michael, I didn't think he did.

If this is the case, then we taught the student a valuable lesson in stating her question clearly.  This prevents us from making any guesses on what the student actually mean.

Meira,  I'm a retired computer pro.  I noticed that on this simple forum, tutors can change answers but not comments. So, if someone writes a really unusual answer, watch you comments, because the answer may change but not your comments.

Thank you David!  You're teaching this old teacher a lot here!  The world has changed so much.... When I first started teaching we used ditto masters to make worksheets, and our fingers were always covered in purple ink.. the "world wide web" had not even been born. It simply did not exist.  I have continued to teach in schools and school districts that can not afford the most updated technology.  My most technologically advanced classroom, at the school where I presently teach, allows me to make power point presentations!  I hope everyone will be patient with me as I learn this new online method of tutoring, and I apologize to those whom I might accidentally offend!!!! I greatly appreciate any feedback in this area! As much as I am a master teacher in mathematics.... I am still a novice in the use of this technology!
