Don't forget, the order of operations is PEMDAS!
Parentheses
Exponents
Multiplication
Division
Addition
Subtraction
1. First, we'll look at Parentheses
- We have 1 parenthesis in this problem. (1 2/3 - 4/5)
- When you have a parenthesis, the order of operations starts all over again! But we only have to subtract.
- I'm going to assume you know how to subtract fractions. We will get 13/15
We have this equation now 4 1/3 + 1 3/5 - 13/15=?
2. Now exponents.
- We don't have any exponents!!!
3. Now multiplication
- No multiplication either!
4. Now division
- We only have fractions, and because they are as simple as they can get, we won't worry about it.
5. Now addition
- We have one plus sign in this problem.
- 4 1/3 + 1 3/5
- I am going to assume you know how to add fractions
- 4 1/3 + 1 3/5 = 5 14/15
We have this equation now. 5 14/15 - 13/15 = ?
6. Lastly, we have subtraction
- 14/15 - 13/15 = 1/15
- So now we have 5 1/15
We are left with 5 1/15 = ?
So 5 1/15 is your answer!
