Shauntale,
Following the order of operations in mathematical expressions ((1) Parenthesis, (2) Exponents, (3) Multiplication, (4) Division, (5) Addition and (6) Subtraction) the expression is simplified as follows: 5+9^3 = 5 + 729 = 734.
The exponential operation is done first in the expression given above (9^3=9*9*9=729). Then the addition is done. Therefore 5 is added to 729 to get a final answer of 729.
I hope this helps!

In order to solve this problem you must follow the Order of Operation Rules. In this case the 9^3 operation is done first. The answer is then added to 5. So 9^3 = 9 x 9 x 9 = 729. Then, 5 + 729 = 734.
5+9^3 = 734.
If the problem was written as (5+9)^3, then you would add 5 + 9 = 14 and then 14^3
14 x 14 x 14 = 2744.
In general the Order of Operation is from first to last:
Raising to exponents
Multiplying/Dividing
Adding/Subtracting
Always perform operation inside parenthesis ( ) before applying operations outside the parenthesis.
Hope that help,

5 + 93 ---> equivalent with: 5 + 9 * 9 * 9. Now we simplify 9 * 9 * 9 which is: 729
so, we have 5 + 729 which is 734.

Purple Eggplants Make Delicious Afternoon Snacks. (Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, and Subtraction)
Exponents precede addition.
9^3 = 9*9*9 = 81*9 = 729
Now add 729 to 5 to simplify.
