Organizations that operate under high-stakes, high-pressure conditions, such as the military, may need a hierarchical model to function optimally. Organizations that rely on innovation may benefit from transformational leadership styles that encourage individual development, experimentation, and autonomy. Blake and Mouton's managerial grid is a good place to examine the spectrum of leadership styles and consider in what environments they are appropriate.
