Nothing happened to the dollar. They paid $27 for the room when they should have only paid $25.
They lost $2 that the bellhop kept. $27-$2=$25, not $27+$2. The bellhop should have given each person $5/3=$1.67 back; then each person would have paid only $8.33 which is the correct price per person for 3 people because 3*($8.33)=$24.99 ($25) which is the price of the room.
