What happened to the dollar

Three FFA members checked into a hotel room at the state FFA Convention. They were charged $30 So they paid $10 each. The manager realized that he had overcharged them since the convention rate was 25$ for the room . The manger gave the bellhop $5 to return to the three members . On the way to their room the bellhop could not decide how he was going to split $5 among three people. He decided to keep $2 for his trouble, and to make the math easier. The bellhop gave $1 to each FFA member. The three members had now paid $9 each, or a total of 27$. This, plus the $2 the bellhop kept for himself, makes a total of $29 . What happened to the other dollar?

Nothing happened to the dollar. They paid $27 for the room when they should have only paid $25.

They lost $2 that the bellhop kept. $27-$2=$25, not $27+$2. The bellhop should have given each person $5/3=$1.67 back; then each person would have paid only $8.33 which is the correct price per person for 3 people because 3*($8.33)=$24.99 ($25) which is the price of the room.
