Question

An ostrich egg has about the same volume as a sphere with a diameter of 5 inches. If the eggshell is 1/12 inch thick, find the volume of just the shell, NOT including the interior of the egg. Round to the nearest tenth. Can you please show the steps too, please? Thanks!!!

Volume of Sphere=(4/3)Πr^3

 

If the diameter is 5, then the radius is 2.5

 

V Sphere=(4/3)Π2.5^3=20.833Π

The radius of the Sphere without the shell is 2.5-1/12=2.417

V of Sphere without the shell=(4/3)Π2.417^3=18.733Π

V of just egg shell is the difference between the two volumes:

 

20.833Π-18.733Π=2.1Π=2.1*3.14=6.6

 

The volume of the shell is roughly 6.6 cubic inches
