Question

An ostrich egg has about the same volume as a sphere with a diameter of 5 inches. If the eggshell is 1/12 inch thick, find the volume of just the shell, NOT including the interior of the egg. Round to the nearest tenth. Can you please show the steps too, please? Thanks!!!

Radius of egg with shell = 2.5 inches       Radius of egg without the shell  = (2.5 - (1/12)) inches

 

Volume of shell = (Volume of whole egg with shell)  - (Volume of the egg inside the shell)

 

 

Volume of shell =      (4/3  x   pi  x   (2.5)³  )          -     (4/3   x   pi  x (2.5 - (1/12))³ ) 

 

Volume of shell =          65. 4498                         -             14.1140

 

Volume of shell = 51.3358 inches³ =  51.3 inches³
