An annual movie club membership is $30. With a membership, movie tickets are $5.50 instead of $8.00. How many movies do I need to see to pay for the membership. I think the answer is 12, yet I need help setting up the equation.

in order "to pay" for the membership fee, we have to divide that fee by the difference between the regular price per ticket and the lower membership price

 

the regular price is $8.00, the membership price is $5.50, and the membership fee is $30

 

let x = number of tickets; so x($8 - $5.50) = $30

x = $30 ÷ ($8 - $5.50)

x = $30 ÷ $2.50

x = 12 tickets
