I am not sure that this is the best place to answer this type of question, as it is a very complex one. Some of the factors you need to consider are:
- Is this based on a biological prep, or a purely synthetic prep? You will need to read papers on how the various variations of cephalosporin are synthesized. If you are going with a purely synthetic prep, I hope that your orgo knowledge is solid if you need a detailed answer.
- Do you need to give a broad general answer or a specific method for a specific cephalosporin?
Since you are not really providing this information, I can only give you some ideas of how to go about this:
- Check the process flow diagram for penicillin (a Google search should help you there), as the penicillin process flow is easily available. Since both molecules are beta-lactams, they are related. You might be able to adapt the penicillin flow to fit the cephalosporin process in general, or the process needed for a specific cephalosporin.
- Compare the synthetic methods devised for penicillin and see how they were adapted to the process flow and use the same concepts to adapt the cephalosporin synthetic methods to a process flow.
I know that these are only general concepts, but what you have on your hand is a fairly large project that will require a fair amount of reading to answer in any sort of detail.
