An architect designs a rectangular room with an area of 400 square feet. The length is to be 8 feet longer than the width. Find the dimensions of the room. Round your answer to the nearest tenth of a foot.

Let assume that width of room = w

 

length of room=L= w+ 8

 

 

Area = L * w

 

400= (w+8)*w

 

400= w²+8w

 

w²+8w-400=0

 

Using quadratic formula

 

w =16.39 foot

 

l=w+8=16.4+8=24.39 foot
