fraction problem

Tyler has 5 cups of lemonade. He wants to pour them into glasses that have 1/2 a cup in each. How many glasses of lemonade will he be able to pour? I feel like this is a division problem but I'm not sure. Please explain thanks.

          You are right Nancy...it is a division problem. Simply put it is

Five divided by one-half.       5/1/2  or  best to write it this way...

 

         (5/1) / (1/2)    then write the five over one   (5/1)   TIMES      invert the one-half    (2/1)

 

Then you have the five over one (5/1)  Times the two over one   (2/1)...and your answer is Ten -Over ONE

 

(10/1)... then then divided by one equals Ten    10------->  your answer     TIP: When dividing fractions

ALWAYS "FLIP" (Invert)  by the divided  by number and multiply.

5 divided into x cups = 1/2

5/x=.5

5=.5x

 

So, 5 divided by 1/2

5/1 divided by 1/2. Multiply by the reciprocal.

5/1 * 2/1= 10/1 or 10
