How do I balance chemical equations?

In the example given, if you start with hydrogen (H), they are already balanced with 2 H atoms on each side. If you start with oxygen (O) then you have H2 + O2 ==> 2H2O. That gives 2 O on each side. Now you have 4 H on the right, so go back and place a 2 in front of H2 to get the final balanced equation: 2H2 + O2 ==> 2H2O
