Throughout my 10+ years of tutoring, I found the most success came when I tailored each lesson to each student's needs. I evaluate where the student is in comprehension by reviewing school work and creating practice quizzes. This helps me find the student's learning style, where they might be struggling, and where the curriculum might need adjusting or a different approach. Supporting students and helping them succeed is my main goal in all of my sessions. In some cases, I have even attended classes with students to further evaluate or support; including working alongside educators and parents.
I think the most important steps are to:
- Find out the student's learning style.
- Find out where the student is struggling
- Teach good note-taking methods.
- Tailor sessions to the student's needs.
- Teach and reinforce good study habits.
- Work cooperatively with educators and parents. -making them aware of the student's needs, and steps that can help outside of tutoring or classroom settings.
I use these steps to help every student. The goal is to teach practices that will lead to long-term success.
