This process is called Photosynthesis! For a basic understanding, not a lot of this is important though. The basic principle is that the plant cells turn carbon dioxide, sunlight, and water to make sugar for the plant and oxygen, that is released into the air.

In plant biology, plant cells have an organelle called Chloroplasts, which are membrane-bound sacs that have these discs all stacked on top of each other, called thylakoids. These thylakoids absorb sunlight and use its energy to make oxygen, ATP (the energy molecule) and charged electron particles that are carried by a special molecule that is unimportant right now. outside these discs and inside the open fluid area of the chloroplasts a second process happens to turn those products from photosynthesis to turn carbon dioxide into cellular sugar, called glucose.
