Hey there! Great question.
First, find a good “academic match.” Think about what subjects excite you the most and what you might want to study in-depth. I can help you research schools with strong programs in those areas, whether it’s science, business, or the arts.
Extracurriculars, clubs, and sports tend to be the most rewarding and fun parts of high school! It’s important to research and understand your extracurricular fit. Look for schools where you can continue doing what you love. Many colleges can offer great educations—but not all of them have the kinds of communities you might be looking for! Joining clubs, writing for student publications, or engaging in community service can make your college experience fun and fulfilling.
Finally, think about what’s ahead! You’ve likely heard that it’s good to think about your future, and while it can be really overwhelming, it’s good to try to conceptualize what’s possible. Consider how different colleges can support your career goals—every college has a kind of career center, internship lab, or graduate school support system. Even if you’re unsure, I can help you explore schools with strong career centers, internship opportunities, and alumni networks to set you up for success!
I recently worked with a student who applied to ten schools, and three they were seriously considering were Stanford, Yale, and the University of Michigan. They weren’t sure what they wanted to do career-wise, so we looked at each school’s offerings. Michigan offered exceptional value and research, Stanford had incredible research opportunities and sunny weather, and Yale had a great alumni network for law or government careers. Most of all, though, being close to home and their family was important to them. After trying to maximize financial aid and award packages at every college, I was able to help my student connect with UMich’s financial aid office and get a better package. Michigan’s scholarship and aid gave them flexibility to explore different majors without financial stress. Plus, they loved Michigan’s football games and student spirit, which sealed the deal!
I hope this helps! Please reach out if you have more questions.
