asked 04/03/24Sig Figs in Theoretical Yield
I calculated the theoretical yield for my chemistry assignment, I am just unsure how many sig figs I need.
My answer is The theoretical yield in g of this experiment based on the mass of aluminum 0.8832g is 15.52932721 g. And the molar mass of alum I got was 474.39 grams. I am unsure whether my 15.52932721 should have the number of sig figs like the 0.8832 or 474.39. .... I think my number should have 5 sig figs.

If you are dividing or multiplying those two values to get 15.52932721 g then your answer would have only 4 sig figs because you use the number with the least amount of sig figs. That would mean you would use the value 0.8832g and thereby your answer would be 15.53 g because this is 4 sig figs. If you are subtracting or adding the two values above then you would base your answer off of the least amount of decimal places at which point you would use 474.39 grams to determine the correct amount of sig figs.
