The word phlegmatic describes people who are generally unemotional, calm, and self-controlled.
It is one of the four temperaments in the ancient theory of humorism, which believed that human emotions were controlled by the amount of bodily fluids in their system. Anything out of balance would lead to different personality patterns.
The other humors besides phlegmatic were choleric, sanguine, and melancholic.
