How come original charges disappear when ionic chemical formulas are calculated? For example, Na+ and O2- become Na2O or Al3+ and Cl- become AlCl3

How come original charges disappear when ionic chemical formulas are calculated? For example, 

Na+ and O2- become Na2O or Al3+ and Cl- become AlCl3
