asked 11/29/23How would you teach a child of 9 to read who has been diagnosed with dyslexia
My granddaughter lives in Peru and has two teachers one of whom is leaving. She is also tutored through zoom with a teacher who specializes in teaching dyslexic children. I would like a reading/math teacher who has experienced teaching elementary children who also has experiences with teaching children who has dyslexia.

Dyslexia Reading Teacher: Innovative, Empathetic Learning Support
Social-emotionally, we must first begin with why your granddaughter would perhaps want to read in the first place. Hobbies; topics of interest; pop culture; favorite core subjects—any of these domains of knowledge can serve as context for developing your granddaughter’s intrinsic motivation to read. If there is no intrinsic motivation to read, then reading challenges are even more augmented.
Then, within those interests, we can begin with audiobooks, short texts, text-to-speech tools: practice materials that are bite-sized and scaffolded towards more complex and sophisticated reading.

Orton Gillingham Trained for Students with Dyslexia
The Orton Gillingham system uses the science of reading to first assess your grandson to find out what his unique needs are in reading. The lessons are then taught based on his learning needs, using a scientific approach to teach reading from sounds to words. What approach are the teachers working with him using?
It is important to use multisensory techniques with dyslexic people. The gold standard for helping dyslexic folks gain literacy skills is Orton Gillingham - this method involves teaching people the rules of language in a very intensive way. There are many OG-based approaches that can be used. I use Wilson Language System. It is important that the lessons are fast-paced, fun, and engaging so that the student can maintain interest.
